Steampunk Abyss Weekend Update 2


This week while making the tutorial I found a major camera bug introduced by the engine update. This bug made it impossible to add new rooms to the game without breaking the camera in the Abyss causing it to show the whole room. I ended up needing to overhaul the camera system completely to deal with the way Gamemaker now handles all assets, including rooms. That combined with my participation in Ludum Dare  47 means this update is a bit smaller than the initial plans but all those features that are not quite done will only serve to make next update massive.


The Good:

  • Updated art for wave and cone bytes. No more ugly programmer art!
  • Pause menu with many super cool (read: basic functionalities) features! It also pauses the game if you're in the Abyss and lets you exit to the hub.
  • Updated font on main menu and settings menu to match with the rest of the game.
  • Scanlines on all menus. These scanline values are still being adjusted but they add massively to the aesthetic of the menus. They can be toggled on or off in the settings.
  • Fixed a UI glitch where sometimes camera position would make buttons clickable areas shift.
  • Fixed a massive camera glitch mentioned above.

The Bad:

  • Tutorial room done. Missing text and final cutscene. Moved to next week.
  • Ability bytes don't save yet so I disabled their drops. Coming next week.

The Ugly:

  • Scanlines on some menus are too aggressive. I will be adjusting these as development continues.
