Steampunk Abyss Weekend Update 4
So the combat update is in progress. I am working on a branch specifically for it and it will release when we release the trailer. In the meantime I will be releasing updates with some other features to help polish what is already playable. This week I was focused primarily on a few important bugs and even more importantly - accessibility.
Gaming is a community and its a devs responsibility to make their games as friendly for all members of the community as possible. Some developments are happening that reduce the effort we need to put into it. I recommend looking into Microsofts' Adaptive controller which is amazing tech. But many devs from indie to AAA seem to put off accessibility options and sometimes fail to even include the most basic features. Or implement them so poorly they may as well not exist. Can't tell you how many times poorly made subtitles have ruined my time with a game.
I think a lot of it comes from the feeling that these features cater to a small percentage and so they play second fiddle to other "necessities". However that is starting to shift. Not only are they recognizing that a lot higher percentage of people benefit from these features, look up how many color blind people there are, but that normal players benefit from this as well.
With that in mind this update comes with a few first steps towards accessibility. Control remapping and the ability to change Enemy/Player projectile colors.
The Good:
- New options under graphics for Player and Enemy projectile colors
- Controls menu implemented with remapping
- Menu music courtesy of the teams amazing composer. Check out his channel and get a peek at music coming to the game soon here
- New start screen. Upon exiting this screen game enters fullscreen. This prevents some menu visual glitches and polishes it up a bit
- Clicking fullscreen in options now asks if you want to enter windowed mode with a warning rather than waiting till play is pressed. This allows this option to be changed mid-game
- Fixed pause menu crashing Tutorial
- Fixed various rare crashes
- Fixed drone not fading properly to black
- Replaced debris sprite in tutorial
The Bad:
- Special keys - Function keys, shift,tab,etc.. - display incorrectly in options menu. Still function however
- Extra mouse buttons outside the standard may not function. If anyone is willing let me know what happens when selected.
The Ugly:
- Nothing new to add here for once. Only the established issues.
